Writing for Dollars – How To Get Started

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

“When you provide good information from which readers can learn and profit, people are more likely to buy your products and services.”

- Heidi Richards -

So just how do you get started? The first step, of course is to write the article. The second step is to find the right medium. I have a small business in the floral industry. So the floral community would be my first likely target. Industry experts are generally the most sought after writers for targeted publications. Since I write mostly about sales and marketing for small business, my second likely medium would be business-related publications, such as those published by Chambers of Commerce, small business journals and other retail industry publications.

I have also found that each type of media that has printed my articles has different criteria for submission. Some want you to send a letter outlining your ideas while others will allow you to submit the actual article. However, most editors prefer that you send a query letter first and include a paragraph about yourself. I also include a link to both my websites in case they want additional information. However, many ezines and online publications allow you to send the actual article. Visit your library, online or local bookstore or do an Internet search with the words query letters for the “how to’s” of writing them.

It should go without saying that the article must be grammatically correct and free of spelling errors. A publisher is looking for quality content that will make her or him look better to the reader. The more unique your article, the better your chances of getting it published. Real-life, personal examples and stories have a much greater chance of getting published than do “book reports.” Make sure the article is yours! No plagiarism allowed. If you do copy someone else’s work, not only will you open yourself up to all sorts of legal problems, you will destroy any credibility you hoped to establish.

Whether you write articles for print media or for online publications, follow these guidelines to increase your likelihood of getting them published.

Read the publication. Become familiar with the writing styles and content. It took several months, before one of my articles was accepted by Balance Magazine. It was an article on leadership, which they liked and found space to include. Because I was patient, tenacious and had developed a relationship with the editor, I was asked to be the South Florida Profile Editor and now write an ongoing series of articles called the PMS Principles. I interview successful women in South Florida and write their stories. What a great way to gain exposure! By the way, the PMS stands for Partnering, Mentoring and Service, which is also the title of a new book I am writing.

Send your article to the assistant editor when there is one. You will find her or him listed in the publication.

Ask the publication for their editorial calendar (often found on their website). An editorial calendar lists the “focus” or theme of each issue. This is a great tool to use when deciding what to write and submit.

Find out the submission requirements (writer’s guidelines). These will include length of article, format, number of words, do’s and don’ts, as well as deadlines for submission. In some cases it will also include writer’s compensation, if and when they pay for articles.

Write about what you know. It’s easier to “sell” and easier to write when you draw upon your own experiences and those of others you know. You could also write about a personal experience or a hobby you pursue (if it is newsworthy).

Keep it simple – plain text, simple fonts, 12-point type are generally the most widely accepted format.

Use short paragraphs. Commercials use sound bites to keep the audience’s attention. Short paragraphs have a better chance of keeping the reader interested.

Don’t over-punctuate. By this, I mean the use of the exclamation point!!! or … or ??? mark. Overusing punctuation will make your words have less impact over time. And if you are submitting your articles on the Internet, these are often flagged as “spam” and may never even be read.

Ask questions. Then answer those questions. This will keep the readers’ attention and interest.

Bullets can accentuate your points. Since people read in sound bites, bullets help the reader absorb the information in bite-sized pieces.

Use creative headlines to sell your message. Instead of “How to Write Articles,” use “Writing for Dollar$” or something more enticing. Send me a note with Headlines in the subject line and I will send you the article on Headlines that sell.

Keep track and follow up. This gets more difficult over time, since your articles might be reprinted and you don’t even know it, unless the publisher sends you the courtesy copy. Keep track of where you submit your articles, and follow up with editors to find out if and when they will be used. If editors don’t use your work, ask for feedback. This will help you become a better writer. Create a record for yourself of the publication, the URL (web address) and the name and contact information of the person to whom you submitted your article.

You can submit your work online to some of these more popular places. Keep in mind, there are literally thousands of ezines out there, below are just a few sites to submit your work:

http://www.ezinearticles.com

http://www.netterweb.com/articles

http://www.goarticles.com

http://www.ideamarketers.com

http://www.articlecity.com

http://www.authorconnection.com

http://ezinelocator.com

Never give up! Be patient. As the saying goes, “timing is everything,” and editors and publishers are busy. If your content is good (and interesting) eventually someone will notice’ and you will get published. Once that happens, capitalize on the momentum and keep going. The purpose of writing articles is after all to get people to start talking about you. Oscar Wilde said “The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about.” Make writing a part of your marketing plan and who knows, several articles later, you could be the talk of the town.

Some Riveting Facts about the Spanish National Lottery Lotto

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

On December 2008 e-lotto added the Spanish lottery to it’s product range, granting players globally a vastly improved opportunity of sharing in this tremendous Spanish lotto prize fund.

If it’s the first time you have come across the Spanish Lottery, let me highlight simply how crucial this lotto is to the vast majority of the Spanish population. The Spanish lotto has been a national obsession in Spain for a long time with immense interest generated by the Christmas lotto draw every year. Believe it or not ninety-eight per cent of the population play this Spanish National lotto each and every Christmas.

There are a couple of underlying reasons why so many Spanish subjects join in the Christmas Elgordo lottery draw.

First Of All, there is the incentive of the biggest lotto prize fund of any international lotto game – 2.20 Billion Euros! Secondly, there are in excess of thirteen thousand cash prizes to be won. Lastly, the probability of collecting a cash prize on the Christmas draw is a highly achievable – one : six.

With the quantity of interest that is dedicated to the Christmas El Gordo lotto draw, a great deal of individuals are unaware that there is 5 extra Spanish Lottery draws yearly also. These lotto games take place on January, March, May, July and November. While these five games don’t boast the big prize fund of the Christmas lotto draw, they are large all the same, ranging from seventy eight million Euros to six hundred & sixty six million Euros. Plus, these games offer almost three times as many prizes as the Christmas lotto draw and odds of picking up a money prize of an splendid 1 : 3.

The Christmas Spanish Lotto operates in an unusual way to nearly all other world drawings. A whole ticket ‘billete’ is really pricey, costing two hundred Euros. However, these lottery tickets are broken up into ten ‘decimos’ (tenths) costing twenty Euros apiece.

When buying your lottery tickets you have the option of purchasing one decimo, a complete lotto ticket, or a part of a lotto ticket. If you don’t buy the entire lottery ticket, someone else will purchase the rest of your lotto ticket. For example, when you purchase 2 decimos, someone else purchases three decimos and somebody else purchases five and your lottery ticket wins one thousand Euros, and then you will collect two hundred Euros, 300 Euros and five hundred Euros respectively. Owing to the expense of buying a whole lottery ticket, it is not unusual for families and friends to united their lotto cash and each buy a separate ‘decimo’ 10th.

Complete Guide to GA Car Insurance Policy

GA Car Insurance Laws

In GA, it is commanded by law that all drivers maintain a Georgia car insurance policy for their automobile. As a motorist in GA, you are required by law to carry $25,000 per person bodily injury coverage, $50,000 per accident bodily injury insurance coverage for two or more people, and $25,000 per accident for damage to property. This type of insurance policy is noted as 25/50/25.

In GA, when a car accident occurs, someone is always held at fault – this is how the law works under tort law. Obligation for financial restitution lies in the hands of the individual found at fault as well as their insurance underwriter. In Georgia, motorists are not mandated to incremental coverage such as personal injury protection or uninsured/underinsured car insurance coverage. These policies, while not called for, are not a bad option to add onto your car insurance. There are many people in GA who decide that they want to add PIP and underinsured/uninsured coverage to their car insurance. These laws were established to protect people and their automobiles on the GA roads. To guarantee compliance with these laws, car insurance firms are required to share information about your policy with the Department of Revenue by way of a statewide database. motorists are encouraged to carry proof of car insurance coverage at all times. If you are have not been given an actual card from your insurance underwriter, you should hold a duplicate of your policy’s declaration page in your vehicle. You will be asked to show this evidence of insurance coverage if you are confronted for a traffic violation, involved in a car accident or stopped by a police officer.

Georgia is not a no-fault state, but instead, they operate under the Tort system. This intends that for all accidents, one of the motorists must be found to be blamable and they, along with their insurance company, will be held answerable for damages resulting from the accident.

Personal Injury Protection – This type of incremental coverage covers extra medical damages and other expenses that are not covered under a standard policy.

Uninsured or underinsured insurance coverage is another elective extension that can be appended to your car insurance. This car insurance coverage protects you in the result that the motorist involved is uninsured at the time of the accident.

Georgia insurance firms are demanded by law to input the details of your insurance coverage into a statewide database. This database is kept by the Department of Revenue. To protect yourself in the consequence you are in a car accident or are pulled over by the law, you should always have proof of your insurance with you whenever you are driving. Failure to due so can result in fines of $200 or having your license suspended

Microsoft Looking to Get a Piece of the Netbook Pie with Bundled Offers

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Last month when Microsoft was heard complaining about the netbooks lowering its revenues, it was speculated that the company may take some major steps to tackle the situation. Now there is word from the Redmond camp that it is planning to build a netbook version of its upcoming operating system Windows 7, and is busy looking at the mobile broadband market to understand how bundled sales can increase its market reach.

Netbooks have become really popular recently, particularly with the users of mobile broadband. The appeal of these scaled down laptops lies mainly in their portability and their novelty. Because of their low processing power, these devices are usually sold with a lightweight installation of Microsoft’s Windows XP, and the company of course doesn’t like this situation at all, because it is eating away its revenue.

Microsoft has confirmed that it is trying to fix the revenue loss by making a netbook friendly version of the forthcoming Windows 7. During the Growth and Innovation Day at Brussels, Neil Holloway, who is the vice president of business strategy for the company, spoke to ZDNet UK about this, saying that talks are currently going on with various operators and telcos for coming up with bundled offers for netbooks. The company is clearly aiming for a bigger market presence among the netbook users.

If mobile broadband interests you, but you don’t want to get involved in a lengthy contract, or you simply wish to try it out, consider pay as you go mobile broadband. There are many options available now to entice users to mobile broadband.

The Raw Truth About Persuasion and Copywriting!

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

I get asked all the time, “Lorrie, how can I make my copy more persuasive?” Well frankly it helps if you can speak your prospect’s language. But writing persuasively is more involved than just saying the right words. You need to say them in the right order…and in a way that lowers resistance to new information and is acceptable to his or her mind. One discipline that translates nicely to writing persuasive copy is NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming.

NLP isn’t a replacement for good copywriting. It’s a turbo boost. Meeting a person on his or her own level by using familiar words puts YOU in control of the communication almost immediately.

Have you ever been moved to buy a pair of sexy shoes instead of the sensible, comfy shoes you really needed? But when you got home you didn’t know how you got over the resistance of spending the money? See, people understand the RESULT of making a purchasing decision, but are often unaware of the internal recipe that gets them there. We all know we tend to buy based on emotion over logic. In fact, most buying decisions are largely emotional.

WHO’S RIGHT ANYWAY?

We can all agree there are two sides to the brain, correct? The left (logical) and the right (emotional). Interesting fact: information is first perceived by the emotional right brain. Then within a fraction of a second, it shoots over to the logical left. Then finally, once again, is reflected to the emotional right. In other words, every message we get is influenced by the emotional right brain. Pretty fascinating, huh?

Here is the basic principle of NLP as I understand it. There is no mental resistance to an idea you perceive as your own. And whenever any of us engages our imagination, we think we came up with the idea ourselves. So it must be great!!! It aligns with our own beliefs so it’s unconsciously accepted as being the truth and you act as if it’s true. So NLP always prefers to presuppose that changes can be made quickly and automatically.
So let’s cover some NLP principles and how to use it in the art of persuasive writing.

PACING

Pacing is putting yourself in the prospect’s shoes through languaging. Look at David Ogilvy (one of the greatest advertising masters who ever lived) as an example. His first headline for Rolls Royce didn’t come from HIS mind, but that of an engineer at the factory. Ogilvy was told, “You know David, the loudest noise from this Rolls Royce comes from the clock on the dashboard at 60 miles an hour.” And David thought this man, this engineer must know something because he’s constantly in the flow about changes and revisions and everything happening at the Rolls Royce factory. So David did his research and made a connection. I’m not suggesting the engineer was deliberately using NLP on David, but it’s an illustration of how we as humans connect the dots and are able to write persuasively as a result.

Though similar to empathy, pacing is a bit more complex. In pacing, you actually encourage the prospect to use visualization or other accessing cues in a very subtle and vague way. These are the same communication skills of matching, mirroring and rapport that allow you to pace and lead someone to the sale.

NLP Master Ross Jeffries says, “People will not accept that you are an authority on where they should go unless they accept you’re an authority on where they are at.”

In other words, if you’re reading a letter or listening to a podcast, it makes sense for me as a writer to mirror that experience for you. Then you subtly relax:

  • “As you’re sitting there reading this letter…”
  • “As you are sitting in front of your computer…”
  • “While you are listening to this broadcast…”

Any of those phrases have you and the prospect share an experience, which moves him or her toward the sale. Have you ever met someone and felt an instant kinship with that person? Or on the other hand, met someone who you just could never quite get on the same wave length?

What if you knew how to get on that person’s “wave-length”? You would have a totally different outcome – the outcome you wanted! That’s the importance of defining your target audience (or my own term, TAR-KET). You can communicate with that one person because you have already defined him or her.

PRESUPPOSITION OF AWARENESS

This technique also ties to speaking directly to your own target market. (If people don’t have their target market nailed down, it doesn’t matter how good their copy is. It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to sell beef to a vegetarian. It’s just not going to work. So you really have to zone in on your target market.)

The way you do that is to understand your product. Figure out where they shop, where they eat, what they look like. Are they a family or are they single? Do they have dogs or not? Do they live in a rural area or the city? These keys make a huge difference when you are trying to figure out who your target market is. When I write my copy, I write to one person. I visualize everything about them so it’s very real to me when I start to write. I would suggest that you funnel down your target market to your TARKET as much as possible. That’s how you’re able to give them the illusion. You’ve given them information and the mind fills in the blanks. The more specific the better is what I’m saying.

In this technique you direct the conscious mind of the reader by assuming something is true. So you speak to him or her as if something has already happened. Here are some examples:

  • “As you become aware of…”
  • “As you recognize …”
  • “I’m not sure just how excited you can get about this offer but…”

The proper use of language patterns in written words means you communicate by tonal shifts, tempo shifts etc, following the patterns of a question, a statement, or a command. We invite people to share our certainty about our product or service by using an intonation of a command or a statement like “Do you agree?”

PRESUPPOSITION OF TIME

This concept piggybacks onto the previous one. You build on the prospect’s experience of awareness by adding in the element of time. Examples:

  • “Before you order today…”
  • “After you make your decision to order…”
  • “While you are filling out your order form…”

Use language patterns to move yourself and others in a direction that results in a win-win situation. The truth is that we are selling ourselves every day, all day long. Doesn’t it make a lot of sense to use communication skills like NLP to lead someone where you want them to go? And the more that happens, the more successful you will be with your copy.

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Bookcoaching clients come to me at different stages of writing their books. The ones who start from ground zero with a coach and learn what goes into each chapter to make it more readable and sell better. The ones who have been writing a long time, a year or so even. They often leave the project because they ran out of gas–got stuck what to do next. They may think they can manifest their book dream now and make millions.

You want to build your reputation. You want to use your book to brand your business and attract new clients. If your book is almost ready and you think it’s ready for a publisher or self-publishing, think again!

You may just need a line editor who can certainly use “grammar check” and put those commas where they belong. But, if you need to know if your book will sell well, you need to get feedback on a few parts of your book so far. A sample chapter, a table of contents, these are just the beginning of what you need to hit the top selling book charts. If you contact a professional bookcoach or consultant, she will notice if you answered your audience’s major questions that led them to buy your book..

A Perfect Meeting: AKA When You Don’t Want to Strangle the Speaker

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Have you ever worked for weeks or even months, often far beyond normal office hours on a special meeting event only to have it turn into THE PERFECT STORM. Well, maybe your entire crew didn’t perish at sea, but there were those clearly identifiable moments when it looked as if the ship was about to capsize. Although many meeting goblins can contribute to such disasters, sometimes the speaker can be one of the contributing causes. How can such terrors be avoided?

The first preventative measure is to choose your speaker carefully and by this I mean, look a little deeper than usual into his or her modus operendi. Far too often when problems arise, it is because the wrong or at least incomplete criteria were used in selecting the speaker. For instance, it is not uncommon for the only questions to be asked of a professional speaker after viewing their video to be: availability and cost. However, if you want to sleep easier at night, I would suggest that the following issues also be just as carefully considered.

Is the speaker a prima donna? Fortunately there are not too many of these around, but those there are give the rest of us a bad name. Whether a well known professional or a beginner, there is simply no excuse for anyone in or business to be arrogant. We are all there to serve the best interests of our clients and audiences. If not, we do not belong there at all. Any speaker that is arrogant, belligerent or just plain difficult to work with does not belong standing before your audience.

Is this speaker committed to adequately preparing before speaking. More and more meeting planners are asking speakers to truly customize their presentations in order to “reach out and touch” the specific audience where they are at. To do so means that the speaker must be willing to invest into understanding the issues that are at the forefront for each unique audience. This of course is a two way street, in that you must be willing to also take the time to ensure the speaker receives the opportunity to acquire the necessary inputs. However, in the final analysis it is the responsibility of the speaker to only take those engagements that they determine to be a proper fit and customization does not mean merely updating a few old stories and jokes or sprinkling in a few local names.

Coupled with the previous question is whether the speaker, given their good intentions, has the time to invest into your event? It is often possible to squeeze another few hours into an already overloaded schedule for one more “hit and run” engagement, but is that fair to the meeting planner, client and audience. Let’s face it, good speakers today are well compensated for what they do. This is fair, but it is also fair that we give a good measure of effort in return and that does not mean racing to yet another engagement dog tired, speaking and running for the airport before the audience is still applauding. Unfortunately, in this day of frequent and lengthy flight delays, there are already enough unexpected delayed arrivals in the wee hours of the morning and their attendant lack of sleep. These may be totally outside of the speaker’s control however, if they really want to serve, they will use their best efforts to schedule sufficient time for your engagement so that they have done what was within their power to arrive fresh, relaxed and ready mentally and physically for your event.

Finally, is the speaker’s content rich and current. There was a great deal of conversation at the Dallas NSA Annual Convention as to content and I have been hearing the same from speakers’ bureaus and meeting planners alike. Today we are living in difficult economic times. Daily the news is rife with stories of corporate cutbacks and layoffs. Few of us are are strictly entertainers, comedians, humorists, etc. Thus as professionals and experts who speak, we owe it to our clients, audiences and ourselves to bring real value in the form of positive solutions to the perplexing problems that they face.

Finally, look for the AAA approval rating: Ability, Authenticity and Attitude. With these three attributes at the forefront, you cannot go wrong in selecting your speaker!

Do You Use These 4 Powerful Ways To Fire Up Your Motivation?

Monday, March 9th, 2009

It’s so difficult to go on when everything seems to fail, isn’t it? Are there times in your life when you really want to call it “quits” because you just can’t see any good results from all the hard work you’ve done?

Hold your horses!

Never ever think of giving up. Winners never quit and quitters never win. Take all negative words out of your mental dictionary and focus on the solutions with utmost conviction and patience. The battle is never lost until you’ve abandon your vision.

But what if you’re really exhausted physically, mentally, and most of all emotionally? Here are some sources of motivation to prompt you in reaching the peak of accomplishment.

1) The Overwhelming Feeling of Attaining your Desired End

How would you feel after accomplishing your mission? Of course you will feel ecstatic. You might be shedding tears of joy. Let this tremendous feeling sink in and encourage you to persist despite all odds.

When I was studying for the Board Exams, I used this technique to motivate me. I would envision the sweetness of folks calling me a CPA. It would command respect. People will look up to me as a higher level of authority. And I would have better chances of finding a good job. I absorbed all these great perceptions into my inner being in order to achieve my ultimate goal.

2) The Reward System

How would you feel if you’ve entered a contest, but there are no prizes for the winners? It’s not very encouraging, isn’t it?

The same principles apply to your vision. Reward yourself after accomplishing a goal. Set a particular incentive for every objective.

Let’s say if you’ve achieved a particular task, you’ll treat yourself to your favorite restaurant. When you’ve finished a bigger task, you’ll go on a vacation.

Got the idea?

Just set something gratifying to indulge in after completing a certain undertaking.

3) The Powerful Force of Humanity

If you want to succeed, surround yourself with the right kind of people who will support and encourage you all the way.

Be with people who have the same beliefs and aspirations as yours. Positive aura is generated by this fusion of collective energy from people of “like minds.”

On the contrary, being with people who oppose your ways of thinking may trigger a negative, yet very powerful, kind of motivation.

Has anyone ever said to you that “You’ll never get anywhere” or “You’re wasting your time with what you’re doing?”

Didn’t it made you furious and determined enough to prove to them how wrong they were? This is what I’m talking about.

When aggravated, you will do anything to make those who are against you swallow their words. But of course, your main focus should be on the accomplishment of your goal and not for the purpose of revenge. Never let your emotions toward others alter your main objective.

4) Take Care Of Your Health

Exercise regularly. Fill your brains with enough oxygen to allow you to do your daily tasks with more vigor and energy.

Take regular breaks if time allows. Having the will power to continue despite all hardships is extremely important, but you should still know your limits.

If you don’t take enough rest, you will not be able to think clearly and you will not be able to do your tasks properly. In the process, you will just get more frustrated.

Take sufficient sleep and recharge yourself after a hard day’s work. Never, ever ignore your health. I’ve learned my lesson when I sacrificed my health for the sake of success. I’ve worked very long hours everyday and just got minimal sleep. As a result, I became ill.

It’s not worth it. Success won’t matter if you don’t have good health to enjoy it.

Fire up your motivation and live life to the fullest!
